Nagasaki is located in the northern part of Kyushu, Japan, and is the second most visited tourist destination in Korea after Fukuoka. In particular, it is also a place that many people have been visiting recently, and I also went on a family trip recently, but I still made good memories to the extent that I still have lingering feelings. So I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the city of Nagasaki.
What kind of city is Nagasaki?
Nagasaki is a port city located in the northern part of Kyushu and has a similar feeling to Busan in Korea. Historically, exchanges with Western countries such as Portugal and the Netherlands have been active, resulting in the development of exotic cultures. In addition, it has developed as a trading port since the opening of the port in 1899, and now it has a status as an international trading port. However, unlike this background, Nagasaki was a city with a very peaceful atmosphere. There are street trams throughout the city, and it was an attractive city where you can feel the quietness and relaxation unique to small cities.
Is there anything special about Nagasaki?
Castella is one of the foods that comes to mind when you think of Nagasaki. Castella is one of the kinds of bread that Portugal handed down to Japan around the 16th century, and it is said that the recipe that came in at that time has continued to this day. And there are various brands of castella shops in Nagasaki, and each store has a distinct difference in taste, so it's fun to compare and eat. For your information, the restaurant I recommend is a bakery named Fukusaya. The main store is near Higashiyama Temachi Station, so please refer to it when you visit!
And Nagasaki is famous for jjamppong! It's a noodle dish made by a Chinese cook, what does it taste like when you first eat it? I thought about it, but after eating it, it tasted addictive. The soup is thick and the base is meat broth, so people may like it or not, but I personally enjoyed it. In addition, there are many Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, so it's fun to choose and eat.
Where should I go in Nagasaki?
There are two main tourist attractions in Nagasaki. The first is a garden called Gurabhaen, and the second is a beach called Dejima Wharf. First of all, Gurabhaen is a park built on Minamiyamate Hill, which used to be a foreign residential area, and was the background of Puccini's opera Nabi. From here, you can overlook the beautiful view of Nagasaki and enjoy small events such as heart-shaped stone hunting. Admission is 610 yen for adults and operating hours are 08:00 to 18:00, so please refer to it!
The second is the Dejima warp. Dejima Wharf is a complex commercial facility built around Dejima, an artificial island, and it has a great view because it is surrounded by the sea. There are cafes, restaurants, and shopping malls, and it is also famous as a night view attraction at night, so please visit if you have time!
Where can I go in Nagasaki?
Nagasaki can be divided into three main areas: Hirado Island in the north, Sasebo Island in the south, and Haustenbos. All three of these places have different charms, so I recommend you to take a day and look around slowly. Especially, House Ten Boss is much prettier at night than at day, so please refer to it!
What should I do on Hirado Island?
Hirado Island is a small island located in the northernmost part of Kyushu. There is the St. Francis Javier Memorial Cathedral, where the remains of 26 martyrs during the Catholic persecution are enshrined, and the Dutch superior is located where you can experience Western culture handed down from Dutch merchants. Also, as a hot spring village with a 400-year history, there are ryokan and hot spring facilities everywhere, so you can spend your time leisurely.
How can I get to Sasebo and Hausenbos?
First, Sasebo has to travel by JR train, and it takes about an hour and 10 minutes from Hakata Station. And you can go to Haustenbos by train, but I recommend you to take a bus. It can be troublesome because you have to transfer by train. If you take a direct bus from Fukuoka Airport, it takes 2 hours, so you can go more conveniently, right?
What about Nagasaki restaurants?
Nagasaki Jjamppong - Kouzanro
It is the first Chinese restaurant in Japan with the first Chinese restaurant in Japan. This restaurant has a long tradition and is popular with locals. The representative menu is Nagasaki Jjamppong. In addition, there are a variety of menus such as fried rice and mapa tofu, so choose whatever you want!
Castella - Fukusaya
It is a historic bakery and castella and cafe that has been open since its opening in 1624. In addition to the original, we sell various flavors of castella such as chocolate and green tea. It's perfect as a gift, so stop by before returning home!
Orandazaka - Orandazaka Gurabhaen
Kurabaen refers to the Minamiyamate Hill area, which was designated as a foreign residence after the opening of the port in 1863. Western-style buildings were built at the time, giving off an exotic atmosphere. It is now a park, and inside, there are a mansion called Puccini Hall and the former Mitsubishi Second Dockhouse, which are the backgrounds of the opera Mrs. Butterfly.
Dejima Wharf - Dejima Wharf
It is an artificial canal located near Minamiyamate Hill, where various restaurants and cafes are gathered. If you want to have a meal or a cup of coffee while looking at the sea, visit!
